For the sixth year The Bergen County High School of Jewish Studies has compiled this listing of Summer Programs for Jewish Teens. You will find here an inclusive listing of summer opportunities for teens including national travel programs, trips to Israel and other unique and specialized offerings.
We have compiled this information because we believe that these intensive summer programs offer teens an opportunity to take safe risks, grow emotionally and socially, and experience Jewish life in a way that can be life-changing. We know that informal education strengthens and expands the academic classes we offer students in more formal settings.
Please note that all grades listed herein refer to a student’s grade as of September 2010.
All information has been culled from various websites and phone conversations. We have tried to be accurate and inclusive, yet mistakes do occur. We apologize for any inadvertent errors or omissions.
The programs listed below are offered by non-profit organizations that span the religious and ideological spectrum of the Jewish community. We hope that you will spend time looking through this resource to find an exciting program for your child.
If this information is instrumental in helping you choose a summer program for your child we'd like to know! Please email me at lforman@bchsjs.org and tell me how you heard about this site and which program you chose. Please email me any programs that you would like included and this listing will be updated.

Since 1950, AJSS, an independent charitable organization, has been conducting voluntary summer work camps
throughout the U.S. Our projects usually involve the construction or repair of one or more buildings. We have built a school, a gymnasium, single family homes, barns, recreational facilities, and a community center; installed water systems; repaired homes, etc. In 121 projects, we have worked in 45 states in such widely scattered places as New Mexico, California, South Dakota, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Kentucky; 17 projects have been on Indian Reservations. Recreation, education and religion are included in the program.
Each summer, AJSS selects three local community organizations to be our partners. We bring groups of 16-18 able young workers to work on their critical construction projects, often low-income housing. The local organization provides materials and supervision for our team.

American Jewish World Service - 6/20 - 8/11 Africa, Asia or the
Volunteer Summer Americas
AJWS Volunteer Summer is a program of service, study and personal growth for Jewish young adults between the ages of 16 and 24. Participants pursue justice in solidarity with AJWS partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the developing world to promote social change in their home communities and explore the relationship between social justice, service and Judaism.
The program begins with a seven-week summer experience in a rural area of Africa, Asia or the Americas. In collaboration with local grassroots NGOs, participants work side-by-side with community members on projects that help build infrastructure and sustainability, like laying irrigation systems, building schools and community centers and planting trees or crops. As part of this service-learning experience, the group gathers each day to study social justice and international development-related topics through a Jewish lens. At the end of each week, the group plans and celebrates a pluralistic Shabbat together, creating additional time for growth and reflection.
After the summer overseas, participants return to their communities inspired by what they have seen and accomplished, and prepared to advocate for social change at home. The program continues throughout the year with retreats and opportunities for public speaking, writing, advocacy and volunteer service to keep activism alive at home and on campus.

Center for Jewish History - The 6/28-7/23 New York
Samberg Family History Program
The Samberg Family History Program will engage you in a multi-faceted exploration of Jewish history and your family's past. We draw upon all of the resources at the Center for Jewish History: our world-renowned collections of books, archival documents, photographs, artifacts, paintings, films, sound recordings, and textiles; our expert curators, archivists, and librarians; our technology offerings, knowledgeable historians, and caring educators. Based in the heart of New York City, we also take great advantage of our city's myriad important research institutions and historic sites.
Through the generosity of the Samberg Family Foundation, all students accepted into the Program receive full tuition fellowships and are recognized as Samberg High School Fellows. Working with expert teachers, scholars, archivists, curators, and genealogists, you will learn the skills you need to mine evidence of the past to answer your own questions: reading official records, letters, personal mementos, photographs, and material objects, and conducting and using oral interviews. We also recognize, though, that teachers are not the only ones with knowledge; all of us in the Samberg Program are both learners and teachers. We encourage discussion, debate, and collaboration.
We believe that history is not something that is confined to the archives. It impinges on our everyday lives and can be found and explored all around us. Off-site travel to some of New York City's key research institutions and important historic sites is an integral component of the Samberg curriculum. Last year's session included trips to Ellis Island, the New York branch of the National Archives, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Mt. Zion Cemetery, and the Bukharian Jewish Museum.

Young Judaea -Ma'apilim 6/27 - 8/4 Italy & Israel
Ma'apilim participants will fly from New York to Rome, where the program will begin. Through tours and meetings with members of the Italian Jewish community, participants will learn about the rich history of Italian Jewry. The program explores the Second Temple period through the mid-20th century when Roman Jews collaborated with American volunteers to smuggle European Jewish refugees into Palestine. In Florence, participants will enjoy charming outdoor cafes and visit the renowned Jewish museum and the Florence synagogue, thought to be one of the most beautiful in Europe. Following Florence, participants will travel to the Fossoli Concentration Camp. Fossoli operated for seven months in 1944, until its Jewish and political prisoners were deported to other camps.
The journey continues in Venice, which was once one of the most important Jewish communities in Northern Italy. In Venice, participants will visit sites within and outside of the Jewish ghetto, including the Piazza San Marco and Venice's five synagogues. Sites in Rome, Florence, and Venice include: The Vatican, St. Peter's Cathedral, The Sistine Chapel, The Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Rome's Central Synagogue, the Florence and Venice synagogues, Roman Forum, the Jewish ghettos of Venice and Rome, the Jewish Museums in Venice and Florence, and the Fossoli Concentration Camp.
